もっとも【尤も】

1 ～な 〔道理のある〕 reasonable; understandable; not without good reason; 〔正しい〕 right; rational; just; justifiable; warrantable; 〔(人情として)当然の〕 natural.

●もっともなことを言う talk [speak] sense [reason]

・もっともな忠告 sound [sensible] advice

・一番もっともな説明 the most acceptable [reasonable] explanation.

●ごもっとも. ⇒ごもっとも

・…と言うのはもっともである. It is rightly said that….

・相手の言い分はしごくもっともだ. What they say is sensible enough.

・あなたの言うことにももっともなところがある. There is something [justice, some truth] in what you say. | You indeed have a point.

・あなたが彼の結婚の申し込みを受け入れなかったのはもっともだ. It was sensible of you [You were right] to refuse his offer of marriage.

・あなたがそう言うのももっともだ. You may well say so.

・彼の言い分はもっともだ. What he says stands to sense [makes (good) sense]. | There is a good case for his saying so.

・彼が怒ったのももっともだ. He had good [every] reason to get angry. | It's quite understandable that he should have got angry.

・彼が不平を言うのはもっともだ. He complains, and with (good) reason [for good reason].

・彼の行動はこれらの理由からしてまったくもっともだ. His conduct is amply justified on these grounds.

・若い人が新しいものを望むのはもっともなことだ. It is quite [only] natural for young people to crave for new things.

2 〔とは言うものの〕

●もっとも例外はある. There are, indeed, some exceptions to this.

・うちの息子はよくけがをする. もっとも大したけがではないが. My son often gets hurt. It's never anything very bad, though.

・政治家は選挙でいろいろ約束をする. もっとも実現した例は少ないが. Politicians make lots of election promises. Mind you, they seldom carry them out.

・彼女は歌が好きだと言っている. もっともうまいこともうまい. She says she likes singing, and, in fact, she is a good singer.

・そういう校則があるのを知っていた学生はほとんどいなかった. もっとも, 教員も同様だったが. Few students―or teachers, for that matter―knew about that school regulation.

・一応上司の命令には従った. もっとも不満がなかった訳ではないが. I did obey my supervisor, but, I admit, not willingly.

●最も重要なこと the most important thing; a matter of the greatest [first] importance; a matter of prime importance

・世界で最も高い山 the highest mountain in the world

・この世で最も美しいものの一つ one of the most beautiful things in this world

・最も金のかからない方法でやる do sth the least expensive way

・最も勇敢に戦う fight most bravely [with the utmost bravery].

●信濃川は日本で最も長い川である. The Shinano is the longest river in Japan.

・私は忙しい時が最も楽しいのです. I'm never happier than when I'm busy.

・80 年代の半ばは日本経済が最も活気を呈していた時期であった. In the mid-1980s the Japanese economy was at its most vibrant.
